Join artist Paul Richmond for an engaging introduction to oil painting! This workshop can be attended online via Zoom or in-person at Upside Down Abundance Studio in Seaside, CA (choose your option from the pull-down menu before purchasing).
Whether you’re completely new to oil painting or looking to refresh your skills, this class will guide you through a variety of techniques and subjects to help you feel confident and inspired. We’ll explore the fundamentals of working with oil paint - mixing colors, building layers, blending, and creating texture - through a series of short exercises followed by a longer painting session. You’ll have the chance to experiment with different subjects, from still life to landscape to abstraction, all while developing your own personal style.
No prior painting experience is necessary - just bring your curiosity and a willingness to play with paint!
This workshop will be recorded, and everyone who registers (whether you attend live or not) will receive access to the video afterward. The recording will be a wonderful resource that you can keep revisiting as you continue practicing and refining your oil painting techniques.
Materials
If you are attending in-person, we will have oil paints available for you to use at the studio (you're welcome to bring your own as well, but not necessary). Please bring your own canvases and brushes. Here’s what we’ll be using:
- One stretched canvas or canvas board 11" x 14" or larger (Paul will use 24" x 30")
- Three small canvases, canvas boards, or canvas paper for studies (8" x 10" or 9" x 12")
- Oil paints (and medium, such as Liquin and Odorless Turpenoid) – at least red, blue, yellow, black, and white
- Paintbrushes (variety of sizes)
- Palette and palette knives
- Rags or paper towels
